Nara: An Excursion into Japanese History
One of the advantages of visiting the Kansai area is the ability to take day excursions to other famous places around Osaka, like the city of Nara. The historic city of Nara has many significant cultural and historical sites to visit. The biggest of which, no pun intended, is the famous Todaiji Temple, (Pictured above). Home of the world heritage site of the giant Buddha.
Todaiji Temple was first built in the Nara period, (710-794 AD) at the behest of Emperor Shomu, (r. 724-749). Although the temple has been destroyed and rebuilt three times in its history, the current structure is over 300 years old and was built in the Edo period.
There is one pillar inside the temple that you can try to squeeze through. This is a popular attraction, particularly for children, but even adults can give it a try! It is said to be lucky if you can fit through it.
Todaiji Temple is surrounded by the beautiful and picturesque Nara Park. Nara Park is famous for its’ deer population which is so tame that they eat right out of tourists’ hands.
A great place to pick up some interesting and quintessential Japanese goods for that perfect souvenir can be found along the road that leads to Todaiji Temple. These shops are pretty reasonably priced, but you may find more reasonable goods in the covered shopping street near the train station. However, there is a higher concentration of souvenir shops on the road leading to the temple, and finding the perfect Japanese souvenir may be easier.
Along the main road that leads to the temple, you will find many little cafes and shops in case you get hungry
An excursion from Osaka to Nara is an easy and fascinating day trip that you will never forget! Whether it is the beautiful city of Nara or a trek up to one of the largest wooden structures in the world Todaiji Temple. You won’t regret an excursion into Japanese history!
