Awajishima Revisited!: Another one!
Awajishima island is one of the most popular destinations for people living in the Kansai area. I’ve written about my former trip to this amazing place in a previous post, (Awajishima: An Amazing Day Trip!), where I wrote about the amazing Awajishima burger. In this post, I want to talk about my experience at Miketsukuni, located in Sumoto, Hyogo prefecture.
There are two restaurant options in this building, one is more of a fast-food vibe and the other is a dine-in restaurant. Both of them have delicious options for trying the local cuisine, with the dine-in restaurant offering unlimited Awajishima onion slices to eat like a salad.
This is the second time that my wife and I have eaten at this restaurant. The first time my wife had the sashimi lunch set and I had the fried shrimp lunch set. Both of them were extremely delicious, made with fresh seafood, my fried shrimp were so plump and juicy with a deliciously crispy exterior! Absolutely amazing! On this trip, my wife had the deep-fried pork cutlet lunch set, while I had Awajishima beef minced deep-fried cutlet. My wife said that hers was delicious, while mine was also delicious. The minced beef was so juicy that the crispy outer breading began to get soggy by the end of the meal, which was a negative point for me, however the overall flavor was amazing!
This is the minced Awajshima beef deep-fried cutlet lunch set. It comes with a house salad, dressed with a delicious house onion dressing, (not for sale), rice, miso soup, and pickled seaweed.
My wife’s pork cutlet lunch set came with the same sides as mine, the only difference being the main dish.
Another thing that makes this place a worthwhile visit, if you come to Awajishima, is the gift shop that is inside the same building. You can find all of the souvenirs you could ever want to buy in Awajishima.
At the gift shop, you can buy everything from Awajishima-brewed craft beer and Awajishima sake to crispy onion-flavored rice crisps and Awajishima onion soup mix and spices. I have bought the onion spice mix, which I love and can’t get enough of! It has an amazing onion flavor, which elevates any dish to the next level. The Awajishima onion instant soup mix is also amazing! It is great as is, or you can use it as a base when making gravy sauces for chicken, pork, or beef dishes. I have used it when making roast pork and roast beef and it was next level!!
The onion-flavored crisps are some of my favorite that I have ever had in Japan! The onion seasoning is delicious without being overly salty, for those who are more health conscious. There is also a natural sweetness, without being overly sweet like a dessert, because Awajishima onions are naturally sweet. Awajishima onions are absolutely delicious either in dishes or cut thin and served raw with a little bit of soy sauce over the top!
Finally, a great dessert you can find at Miketsukuni, is the rum-topped ice cream!
You can choose between four different kinds of rum as a topping and amazingly it only costs ¥500, ($3.13US)!
It is a delicious adult treat and I highly recommend it if you are not driving and like to drink!
Until next time! Cheers!
